An essential checklist to consider when moving home

At MoveStore we know moving home can be overwhelming, that is why we have used our experience to put together this moving checklist. We are here to assist you every step of the way. Below is a list of the essential parties you should contact in the lead-up to your move.

Notify Required Parties

Ahead of time, you can notify certain parties, this will allow you to minimise your workload as the move approaches.

  • Council Tax: Notify both the council for the region you currently live in and the region you are moving into. Find more information at the Government website.
  • Phone and Internet Supplier: In advance of your move date it is worth finding out when your contract expires and the fees that apply to this. Some companies will allow you to transfer your current package to your new home.
  • Television License: You can move your license to your new residence up to 3 months prior to your move date. In order to do this visit the TV licensing website.
  • Recreation: When moving longer distances you may be looking to cancel certain memberships such as gyms, libraries and other monthly passes. Ensure you do this well in advance as they may have different cancellation periods and this will reduce the charges you pay.
  • Services: If you use any professional services, they will need to be made aware of your new address or your notice to terminate. These services include cleaners, gardeners, window cleaners, accountants, and solicitors.
  • Utilities: Your provider for gas, electricity and water will require to know that you are moving. Although you can notify them in advance you must ensure you take meter readings on your moving day.
  • Mail: Make sure you redirect your mail using the Royal Mail redirect service.

You may not be able to notify certain parties well in advance of your moving date. The following parties should be notified after the move date.

  • Finance: When moving you should not just notify your bank of your change of address but also any building societies, pensions and credit card accounts. This will ensure the bank has the correct correspondence address.
  • Health: Many of us remember to notify our doctors but make sure you also notify the dentist, optician and any other healthcare professionals you use.
  • Workplace: Your work will require your new address which can generally be done through your works HR department. HMRC may also need to know your new address and update this in line with your national insurance number. More information on this can be found on the Government website.
  • Electoral Roll: You will need to either change your address or register for your new voting area. More details on this can be found on the Government website.
  • Recreation: When moving locally it is worth notifying gyms and other clubs of your new address for their ongoing correspondence.
  • Vehicles: You will need to update your driver’s license. You should also change the address on your breakdown cover, car insurance and your vehicle log book.
  • Insurance: Notify the following in order to ensure you comply with your policy and they have the correct correspondence for you; life insurance, home and contents insurance, travel insurance, health insurance, and pet insurance.

Moving Timeframe

Some tasks can be completed well in advance of the moving day and this will allow you to reduce the stress as your move approaches. By following this timeline, you will ensure you complete the main tasks in a timely manner.

4 to 6 weeks before the move

Organise and Declutter
Moving house can be a great time to sort through your belongings and decide what should be coming with you and what may not be required anymore. Sorting through your effects can require many decisions and even discussions and this can be an exhausting process. This is why we recommend starting this process well in advance of the move. The areas we suggest starting with are the areas that don’t get lived in every day such as lofts, garages, sheds, spare bedrooms and cupboards.

When sorting through your belongings you will be able to decide what happens with the items that are no longer required. These items can be sold, gifted or recycled. In order to begin the decluttering process consult us to inquire about the packing materials and professional packing services we offer at MoveStore.

Often decluttering can be happening at the same time as your house move. When combining these two processes it is worth considering placing your items in storage using MoveStore‘s decluttering service. This will also allow you to have your additional items delivered at a later date, ensuring you get settled into your new home prior to receiving your surplus items.

Pack Non-Essentials
If you opt to pack some or all of your property yourself, it is worth considering when you will do this. Packing can be a time-consuming process and getting started can often feel daunting. At MoveStore we can deliver your packing materials well in advance of your move date if you wish to get started.

We would recommend starting to pack non-essential items like books, paperwork and out-of-season clothes. Ensure you label these boxes clearly with the room and contents as these will often be the last boxes to be unpacked at your new property.

1 to 2 weeks before the move

Clean and Prepare
You will need to clean your current property or arrange for a cleaner to do so. Remember, you have not just your current home to think about but also your new home. If you want to get the property cleaned before you move in you may need to make arrangements for storage.

If you have opted to pack yourself, now is the time to complete the majority of the remaining packing. Remember and leave enough items unpacked to get you through the next few weeks but trust us when we say packing will take longer than you think. You will have enough to think about on moving week and you will be glad you started packing at this stage.

Moving Day

Removals and Storage Company
Make sure and employ a professional removal company to take the stress away from you. At MoveStore we conduct house removals and small removals, so whatever your requirements are we have the experience to make sure your moving day is as stress-free as possible.

Children and Pets
During the moving day, you will have plenty to consider, whether that be your moving company or solicitors. If you have children or pets it is worth making alternative arrangements for them.

On the moving day itself, you could realistically be without a home for a short period of time. During this time it is worth making sure you have an essential kit with you including some food, drinks, medication, toiletries and any other essentials you and your family may need to get you through the day.

Don’t forget to take those meter readings. This is important for both the property you are vacating and your new property. This will ensure you have no disputes.

Remember and communicate with your solicitor in the lead-up to the move. You will most likely need to return your keys to them in a certain timeframe. It is also worth understanding where you should be collecting your new keys from and when you are allowed to do so. Make sure and communicate these locations and timings clearly with your removal company.

Post Removal

Do not put pressure on yourself to unpack straight away. Unpack those essential boxes to make sure you get settled in. This is your only chance to have an empty house so enjoy unpacking at your own pace. Once you have unpacked, give MoveStore a call and we will come and collect your empty moving boxes.

The days after your move can be stressful but it can also be an exciting time. Make sure you make it a memory by taking a moment to enjoy it. Locate the services you may need in your local area and of course, introduce yourself to your new neighbours.

By following this checklist you can have a stress-free move. Trust MoveStore to focus on the logistics of your removal and you will be able to focus on settling into your new home comfortably. We hope you enjoy the next chapter of your life and thanks for using MoveStore as your trusted professional removals and storage company.
